GPR39 is a 7TM protein related to the G protein-coupled receptors for the gastrointestinal peptides ghrelin and motilin. Although GPCR39 has been reported to be a receptor for the peptide obestatin, GPR39 has been more thoroughly characterized as a receptor for Zn2+, as well as Cu2+ and Ni2+. Studies on GPR39-null mice implicate GPR39 in the control of insulin secretion, thereby indicating its potential as a target for treatment of diabetes.
