The human ACCN2 gene encodes the pore-forming subunit of ASIC1a, a proton-activated, channel permeable to both Na+ and Ca2+ ions. ASIC1a channels widely expressed in the neurons of peripheral sensory and the central nervous system are therapeutic targets in pain and neurodegenerative diseases.
