The human CACNA1C gene encodes the pore-forming subunit of voltage-gated L-type Ca2+ channels. Co-expression with the beta 2 and alpha2delta1 auxiliary subunits recapitulates function in heterologous expression (CHO cells). Cav1.2 channels, widely distributed in cardiac and smooth muscle, and in neurons, are therapeutic targets in cardiovascular and neurological diseases.
