The KCNN1 gene encodes the pore-forming subunit of a small-conductance (2 - 3 pS single channel conductance), K+-selective, channel that is activated by increased intracellular [Ca2+]. Expressed in neurons, hKCa2.1 channels contribute to the afterhyperpolarization that modulates repetitive firing frequency.
