The human KCNN3 gene encodes the pore-forming subunit of KCa2.3, the calcium-activated, voltage-gated SK3 potassium channel. KCa2 channels are responsible for afterhyperpolarization that regulates neuronal repetitive excitation. KCa2.3 channels expressed in CNS neurons are therapeutic targets in neurologic disorders (e.g., cognitive impairment and seizure).
