Nav1.6 is primarily expressed in the output neurones of the cerebellum, cortex and hippocampus of the CNS and in the Nodes of Ranvier of sensory and motor axons of the PNS. Nav1.6 is involved with the initiation and transmission of action potentials in central neurons and their myelinated axons. Mutation or disruption of the Nav1.6 gene causes cerebellar ataxia and motor end plate disease in mice. This channel is a potential target for analgesic and antiepileptic drugs.
